Story:
Cortana, panic in her voice, has run the Master Chief
off to find Captain Keyes and stop him before he does
something incredibly foolish. Running through the
swamps alone, without the assistance of Cortana in his
head, the Master Chief begins to notice that something
is seriously amiss. The resistance is light-- where
are all the enemies? As he proceeds deeper into the
bowels of a Forerunner installation, he finds the
truth. And tries to flee. But it is too late: The
truth is already upon him. And it has really nasty
whippy tentacles.
Introduction:
This
level will introduce you to the Flood, and will begin
to unfold for you why Halo is here. Your orders:
locate Captain Keyes and call for extraction. But upon
finding a horrible secret waiting deep within one of
Halo's myriad installations, your only objective is to
survive. This level features some of the most intense
combat in the game, so be on your tentacles... I mean,
toes.
Part 1: Well Enough Alone
Upon landing, look forward and to the left a bit and
proceed forward to the downed Pelican dropship in
front of you. Load up on weapons and ammo and take
notice on where the ships' tail is pointing; enemies
will soon be coming from that direction.
Take cover behind the rock (on top of the health
packs) and use your pistol to spot the 3 grunts and
Jackal that are coming through the swamp towards you.
Take out the Grunts with a few well placed shots to
their skulls, and try sniping the Jackals body when he
provides you with an opening. If the Jackals get
close, resort to grenades or AR fire, or pick up a
plasma pistol to take down their shields faster.
Proceed in the direction from which they came.
Stay to the left and keep your eyes out for a downed
Covenant Dropship. When you've spotted it, slowly
proceed under it while avoiding being seen by the
Jackals farther ahead and head towards the cliff that
the Covenant dropship is leaning against. Follow this
cliff by walking along the path on its left side. Once
you get to the end (you'll see a fallen tree ahead of
you), proceed to your right, and slowly go over the
cliff. If you get stuck, try jumping. You will now be
over the Jackal group. First, try to take out the
Jackal that is on the tree, to the right of where you
are standing, by using a plasma grenade. Then, use the
cliff as cover and take out the remaining Jackals with
pistol shots to their heads whenever you see an
opening. Don't rush it; the cliff is providing you
cover, so as long as you have the high ground, they
can't hit you. When the remaining Jackals are down,
proceed down onto the tree and cross over the ridge.
As you cross the bridge, you may notice a tall enemy
on the other side of the ridge. This is the first
sighting of the Flood, a Combat Form, but most never
notice him.
Be careful not to fall, and make your way up the cliff
a bit and head to your right (try jumping, or going to
the left a bit if you get stuck). Take cover behind
the Shade gunnery emplacement that is in front of you.
You will hear the Covenant fighting in the distance.
When they are through, begin taking them out with well
placed pistol shots to their skulls. You again have
the high ground and can take cover behind the Shade
whenever your shield needs recharging. Be careful no
to jump into the Shade by accident by trying to reload
near it; you'll be dead before you can jump back out.
When all or most of the Covenant are dead, you may
cautiously proceed downward and dispatch any
stragglers. When you have finished, you should
backtrack to the beginning of the level to load up on
health and ammo before going into the opening ahead,
being careful not to get lost. As you return to the
structure's entrance, a large, A-shaped affair, pick
up some plasma grenades and head in. You'll find the
lift platform inside is just arriving at your level.
Suspicious, but head down anyway.
Note:
If you look carefully at the A-frame, you'll notice it
is identical to the arch over the light bridge in the
second level, Halo.
In fact, much of the architechture is similar to that
in Halo. Remember the part underground at the
end? Maybe we do know what the facilities in Halo
are for.
Hop onto the lift platform and activate the control
panel to drop into the depths of the earth. Face the
same direction after activating the platform and when
it stops below slowly side step off to your right.
There is a group of enemies inside the arch in front
of you. Find a good throwing angle and toss a grenade
(preferably a frag grenade) into the arch. After it
explodes, quickly peek in around the corner (using the
archway as cover) and take out the remaining enemies
with your AR. Next, proceed back around the archway,
taking out stragglers, if any, and proceed into the
arch towards the door ahead of you.
Side step past the open door and toss a Covenant
Grenade at the floor about 20 feet ahead of you. After
it explodes, carefully proceed in and shoot any
survivors. Beware of the Covenant group on the lower
portion of this room; don't allow them to take aim at
you while you're cleaning up the top floor. When you
are finished, try to toss a Covenant Grenade into the
heart of the group that will be across the room on the
right guarding a door. Then, proceed to your right and
begin sniping the rest with your trusty M6D pistol,
again using your high ground to your advantage. If
your shields need recharging, duck for cover and let
them recharge. When all or most have been defeated,
you may proceed down and head towards the door.
Proceed through, and around to the other door. Pass
through it quickly and head straight so that you
aren't seen. Get as close as you can to the group of
Jackals without being seen and toss a plasma grenade
in the middle of them. You may then begin to open fire
to distract them from the grenade, which is always a
smart tactic, or get yourself into a better position
to take them out. Use your Assault Rifle here and use
the various walls as cover. Try if you can to divide
and conquer here.
Proceed forward into the next room. You will find a
Needler (crappy stupid Needlers) and tons of ammo
(wonder why it didn't get used... hmm...). Don't pick
it up. It will suck in most of the rest of the level.
Just keep your current weapons. Jump onto the raised
platform and head through the door. Soon, you will
meet up with a Marine that is having a nervous
breakdown. (Marines with pistols are good. Marines
with mental problems are bad. Marines with both are
worse.) Run in and melee him before he shoots you,
bequeathing his pistol ammo, or just run on past him
if you're feeling merciful. Either way, proceed across
the room and to the left. Notice the Flood-blood in
the middle of the room. Suspicious. Jump up to the
fallen pathway of the second floor (near the fire) and
proceed up and around in the direction in which you
entered the room.
Go through the door and activate the control panel
that will turn on the Light Bridge. Head across and
enter the door ahead of you. Head to the left and grab
some Health and some Ammo and head down into the room
below. Soon, one of the games sweetest movies begins,
enjoy.
Cutscene.
A nervous Master Chief opens a door and is greeted
with the body of a dead Marine. Lowering the body
respectfully, he proceeds cautiously and finds the
helmet of a Marine on a floor; the helmet has the
letters JENKINS stenciled across the side. The Master
Chief inserts the memory chip from the helmet recorder
into his own helmet interface and watches in horror as
a group of Marines, accompanied by Captain Keyes, make
their way to the very room he is in now-- and are
slaughtered by a number of small, round, tentacled
monsters: The Flood. He tries to escape, but it is too
late. They are coming...
Part 2: The Flood
After the movie ends, grab some ammo to your left if
you need it and quickly head straight towards the back
of the room. Stand back a bit keeping your Assault
Rifle aimed at the door. This will be the hardest
point in this level, and perhaps the hardest single
room in the entire game. Soon a brigade of small alien
creatures will barrel through the door. This is the
Flood's Infection Form. Use your Assault Rifle to
drill through the mob of them, and when they start
getting close to you, or if you need to reload, start
jogging backwards. By no means let them close on you.
Quickly turn completely around and look to the second
door on your left, this is the second brigade of the
flood's infection form. Again use your Assault Rifle
to rip through them. If your getting hurt, or losing
health then begin to run backwards away from the
flood. If you avoid contact with them for long enough
your shields will recharge. Soon another mob of the
Flood will barge in. Deal with them in the same
way, being sure to watch your motion trackers and not
letting any get too close.
When you are through killing most of them, turn and
look towards the door you entered through. Another
brigade will enter but this time the Flood's Combat
Form will be entering also. The Combat Form is much
tougher to kill, able to take a fair amount of damage.
Throw a frag grenade in quickly if you can and use the
explosion time to reload. Use your Assault Rifle to
kill as many of the combat forms as you can and then
switch over to your (hopefully loaded) pistol to kill
the few left standing. Quickly switch back to your
Assault Rifle and reload it while avoiding any Combat
or Infection Flood Forms that may be chasing you.
Knock off the stragglers and take a moment to examine
your health and ammo situation. Pick up any Marine
ammo that may be left and head towards the door you
came in through.
Note:
The
Flood combat form is a unique enemy. It is fast and
tough, and will often seemingly die, then rise again
for one more go, so beware. Usually, if they drop
their weapon it means they are actually dead. Using
plasma grenades on them when they are in a position to
rush you is unwise, as they often try to take you with
them as they go-- and they are faster than you. Also,
you can shoot off their tentacle-arms; then they can't
hurt you, and you can use them as "human"
shields against other Flood.
Don't walk between the ramps; instead fire a few
bullets from your Assault Rifle and take a step back,
then toss a frag grenade, if you have one, in between
the ramps. The Flood combat forms will then come down
the ramps towards you, most getting blown up
hopefully. Take care of the rest with your Assault
Rifle, remembering to run backwards if they come close
enough, since they will melee you with their
tentacles. When they are dead, head out and go up the
right ramp. Grab the health-pak and ammo and turn left
towards the open door.
Inside, you will find a battle taking place between
Covenant and Flood in the room below. While they are
all distracted with each other, quickly run to the
door to your right and head towards the next room. (If
you fall you can die and try again, or kill everyone
and head towards the next room on the bottom floor). In
the next room, run to your right and stand back in the
corner. About seven Flood infection forms will attack
you from the side. DO NOT SHOOT THEM! If you shoot
them you will draw attention to yourself. Instead use
your melee attack on them or let them attack you (they
are too few in number and too weak to cause any
serious damage).
Note:
A swift and silent way of dealing with Flood infection
forms is to wait until they hit the apex of their
jump, which would normally land them on your shield,
and hit the melee button. You will club the little
Floody fools right out of the air and into oblivion.
It works even if there are multiple infection forms,
as they will pop each other.
Snipe
a Flood Combat Form with your Pistol and be ready to
take out any leaping enemies with your Assault Rifle.
If the Flood gather below you, toss a plasma grenade
in between the corner of the ledge and the pillar
there. If you don't have a grenade, peek over the
corners edge (you can't fall in between the pillar and
the edge) and they will scatter away from you and into
sniper range. Watch your motion tracker to see which
direction they are scattering in order to figure out
which side of the pillar to shoot from.
Head to the next room using the door on the lower
level to your right (be careful not to head back into
the battle you just entered from). In this room,
you'll find a group of Covenant above on a platform to
the right, and several combat forms wandering around
in front of you. Don't enter the room; instead wait
for the Flood and Covenant to kill each other off as
much as possible. When it seems like the battle is
getting stale, peek into the room and prepare to
unload your pistol into as many Flood as you can see.
Then, backup into the small room again, and quickly
switch to your Assault Rifle and shoot any that follow
you in. Apply repeated doses until they are all dead.
Next, head in and get under the platform the Covenant
are on. To the left of the door they are guarding is a
symbol that looks like a sun rising over a pyramid
inside a big circle. Get next to the side of the
column below the Covenant and toss a plasma grenade at
the center of the pyramid symbol. If done correctly,
the grenade will bounce off the wall and land in the
heart of the Covenant group. Head across the room and
snipe any remaining Covenant with your pistol. Next,
hop up the purple Covenant
freight boxes that have been set up like stairs, but
be aware that any surviving Covenant will shoot you as
you're climbing. Head into the next room and turn
left.
Pick up some health and ammo and continue on straight.
Once past the device, you will see a door on the left.
Walk up so the door opens and shoot a few Assault
Rifle bullets in. Take out the three Flood combat
forms that rush through the door and head in. Melee
the remaining Flood Infection Forms, and hop on the
platform. Activate the elevator and admire all the
split Covenant blood.
Upon landing, you will face about five Flood Combat
Forms. Not a big deal, except for two things: Some of
these used to be human, and most pack weapons.
Dispatch them as quickly as you can and then let your
shields recharge. Take a peek into the next room but
then retreat back towards the elevator. Wait a moment
for the Flood and Marines in the next room to kill
each other and then take another peek in. This time,
get any stragglers outside to follow you into the
platform room and kill them. Grab the overshield on
top of the purple Covenant freight box
"staircase" near the door and the head
around into the room.
Keep low and get ready to run for your life. Grab an
Active Camo cell and then run as quick as you can
across the room to your left. Enter this room and
quickly head across to the right. Hop up onto the
downed cement slab and grab the health if necessary.
Continue up and head across back in the direction you
entered. Head through the door and you'll be on the
upper part of the room you were in before. The cloak
should be wearing off as you begin crossing the room,
so run quickly to avoid being seen. Head through the
door and run left. Run around and into the next room
and head towards a corner. You may be taking a lot of
damage, but you'll have the overshield protecting you
so you'll be alright for now. Kill any Flood that are
with you and let the rest gather below you again.
This time, toss a plasma grenade in between the corner
ledge and pillar, taking precautions to avoid their
seeing you. After the grenade has exploded, head down
and kill any that are left. Move into the next room
and start sniping Flood combat forms with your pistol.
As the Flood start rushing the door, drop a plasma
grenade and back up around the corner. Take out the
rest with your Assault Rifle, and head across the
room. Be careful for snipers on the balcony above.
Head into the next area and be careful of the Flood in
this tiny area. Kill them and head into the next room.
Kill all the Flood combat forms by shooting a few and
running back into the room you came from. As they
follow you back you can easily pick them off as
they're running in. Go back in and kill the rest, and
find the cement slab sitting in the middle of the
floor. Jump onto it (this may take a few times) and
trade your Assault Rifle in for a Shotgun! The
almighty shotgun is the weapon of choice for dealing
with Floody fools who get too close. And that's all of
them. Pick up the health here also, and jump onto the
platform above where it hangs down a bit (face the
center of the room and look left to find it). Go
around and head in the door ahead of you.
Look in and snipe the two Combat Flood Forms across
the room using your Pistol from the safety of the
doorway. Take the remaining Flood Combat Forms out
with your Shotgun and activate the bridge control
panel located in front of you. As soon as the light
bridge appears, run across it and be ready to unload
your shotgun into the doorway on the other side. As
you approach the doorway, a group of Flood combat
forms will enter. Take them down quickly and toss a
frag grenade in the doorway. Take out the rest of the
Flood that attempt to enter then head into the next
room.
Hop on the lift platform and activate the control
panel to go up, this time actually back the surface.
Once on top, regroup with the Marines, and prepare for
the jungle by loading up on shotgun ammo and health
located near the door leading outside.
Head straight out and look at your radar to find the
three Flood combat forms hiding amongst the trees.
Kill them quickly with a few blasts of your shotgun
and prepare to defend your Marines from every enemy
you find entering your radar. Try to stay among the
troops, and defend them until they get ambushed by the
Flood infection forms, against which you can do little
to defend them before they are killed. Blast
everything around you and head towards the next open
area. You should see a huge tree in the swamp. Go to
the left of it and get it in between you and the
oncoming Flood group. You don't want them to see you
and attack.
Soon after the Flood targets the remaining Marine or
two and begin to ambush them, run forward and around
the huge metal building in the middle of the open
area. Continue all the way around it back towards the
front taking out any Flood Combat Forms blocking your
way. Continue running until you come back out in front
of it and a cutscene should begin.
Cutscene:
The
Master Chief sees a small, glowing blue robot and a
flotilla of larger, armored robots with lasers
approaching from among the trees. The laser drones are
slicing away at the Flood as they approach. The blue
device introduces itself at 343 Guilty Spark, the
monitor of Installation 04. He tells you you must help
him contain the Flood, and you are teleported away
amid the protests of Foehammer.
